Drone Footage at Weddings — A Real Benefit or Just an Extra?

How drones changed wedding films

Technology moves fast. Five or six years ago, drone shots at weddings created a real wow effect. Today, they are almost expected. Many couples assume every photographer or videographer brings a drone.

Drone footage helps show locations from above and makes scene transitions smoother. I like using it when possible. But it is an addition, not the main story.

A strong wedding film is built on emotion, not altitude.

When drone footage is possible

In my contracts I always write:

Drone footage included — if weather and location allow.

And that is important.

1. Legal regulations in Germany

Drone flights in Germany follow EU drone regulations.
Key points include:

  • Different categories apply depending on weight (A1, A2, A3).
  • Some categories require distance from residential areas.
  • Flying over crowds is not allowed.
  • Airports and protected areas have special restrictions.
  • Permission is required when flying over private property.

There is no single rule that applies everywhere. It always depends on the drone and the location.

2. Location permission

For private venues, I always ask for approval in advance.
A simple email is usually enough.
It is better to be safe.

3. Weather conditions

Rain, strong wind or fog are not ideal.
Most drones are not waterproof, and the pilot must always maintain visual contact. Safety comes first.

4. Insurance and certification

In Germany, drone pilots must have liability insurance.
Depending on the drone, a European competency certificate is required.

Why I do not sell drone footage as an extra

Because of these factors, I never sell drone footage as a guaranteed add-on.
Weather and legal restrictions are simply outside my control.

Drone shots are great to have.
They create atmosphere and show the setting.
But they do not replace real emotion or storytelling.

If a wedding film only works because of drone shots, something else is missing.
